In June 2006, David and I were due to get married and, being absolute animal lovers, we had already decided to get a pedigree cat as a wedding gift to each other.
In the midst of doing our research on various breeds, we just happened to visit a Bengal breeder, completely by coincidence, who lived close to my parents. When the breeder allowed us to see one of her brown queens who promptly greeted us both with a chirrup, slink and head butt before jumping and landing on David’s shoulder where she couldn’t stop rubbing her head against his face. I could not stop staring at this beautiful creature’s face, eyes and the athletic build of her body.
We were absolutely smitten. That day we both knew that the cat we were going to get to mark the start of our married life was going to be a Bengal.
Weekends were booked up with visiting different breeders and chatting to them about the breed and looking at their own queens and/or kittens. Every time we met and experienced another Bengal we were more convinced that they were the breed for us. Their extroverted and affectionate nature, their highly intelligent capabilities and, of course, their incredible and wild looks. We saw a Bengal use the toilet, a swimming pool which was occasionally used by the cats and many outdoor spaces were the breeding cats were free to climb and explore.
We chose a breeder and arranged when we would come and collect our newest addition to the family. There was a blip in this process which is another story waiting to be written. And I will but for the purposes of this section, this was how we acquired our first pet Bengal, Benji. A beautiful golden brown rosetted boy with a coat dripping in glitter. And just like that life was never the same again.
